Common Telephone Scam Happening in the Area

clock September 25, 2008 15:28 by author Jeff Quibell

Recently I received a call from a friend in Blue Springs who had been the victim of a telephone scam.  After verifying it with our local police department, I determined it was something that should be brought to everyone's attention.

The scam begins when you receive a phone call at your home from someone claiming to be with the Missouri Highway Patrol.  They tell you that a close family member has been seriously injured in an accident and that you need to call a special number to get more information.  They then give you the name of a Highway Patrol Sergeant and a telephone number to call that begins with *72.

The need to call another telephone number is the clue that you are being scammed.  On AT&T phone lines, *72 is the code that allows you to forward your phone calls to another number. What the criminal is doing in this scam is tricking you into setting your phone to forward calls to a long distance number for the use of others.  If it is a long distance call, your phone bill picks up the long distance changes.

Following are the steps to take if you have been a victim of this scam. More...

Get fit and have a healthier life!

My wife Wanda and I moved to Blue Springs in 1984 because of the great school system. We were expecting our first child and like so many who live here we wanted the best for our children. We didn’t know very many people at the time, but it didn’t take long before that changed. During our time in Blue Springs we have been blessed to get to know so many of our neighbors and their families. Serving on the City Council in recent years caused that number to grow so much that I couldn’t even begin to count the number of people in town I consider to be friends. More...

City Council backs off a key priority!

clock September 18, 2008 01:01 by author Jeff Quibell

Monday, Sept 15, 2008, the City Council decided to scale back the scope of work on road improvements for Woods Chapel Road by half a million dollars on the recommendation of District 1 Councilman Shaver.  The council then split on approval of the overall budget and Mayor Ross broke the tie in favor of approving the budget and removing some of the funding from the planned Woods Chapel improvements.

After eighteen years of stagnation in the Woods Chapel corridor, last year the city council finally decided to move forward on Woods Chapel redevelopment.  Now that the voters have solidly approved a bond issue to expand road improvements citywide including Woods Chapel, the current City Council is going back on the original commitment.
