Blue Springs, Mo.– The Breast Center at St. Mary’s Medical Center has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This prestigious designation means the Breast Center at St. Mary’s has earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).

“The Breast Center at St. Mary’s is proud of our dedication to meeting the most stringent standards of quality care,” said Annette Small, CEO. “This accreditation is a reflection of why St. Mary’s has built a reputation for outstanding breast health care.”

The Center of Excellence designation was awarded after St. Mary’s undertook an extensive evaluation process, which included a thorough peer-review by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. The evaluation determined that St. Mary’s has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.

“Only facilities that adhere to the highest practice standards are designated as Centers of Excellence, and now that St. Mary’s is among that elite group our patients can have confidence that they are receiving care from highly experienced experts in the field,” said Colleen Johnson, Regional Director of the Breast Center.

“The Breast Center at St. Mary’s has always been known for providing the highest quality, compassionate care,” said Richard Kuckelman, MD, in the Breast Center at St. Mary’s. “This new accreditation recognizes that our Breast Center is also among the best in the nation in terms of providing the safest imaging and interventional procedures available."

St. Mary’s Medical Center is an active organization in the community offering our patients a caring environment with a wide range of services and expertise. With 146 licensed beds and over 340 active physicians, U.S. News and World Report named St. Mary’s one of the 10 best hospitals in Kansas City.

St. Mary’s is the only hospital in eastern Jackson County earning the Magnet Designation for excellence in nursing care. St. Mary’s also offers a full range of services for women. This includes the Women’s Health Institute composed of the Birthing Center, the first in Missouri, and the Breast Center, complete with Certified Breast Patient Navigators for more personal patient care.

Carondelet Heart Institute at St. Mary’s provides 24-hour cardiac care, diagnostics and interventions. In a National Quality Award, St. Mary’s was named top performer.

Blue Springs, Mo. – The $3.7 million renovation and expansion of St. Mary’s Medical Center’s surgery area is nearing completion. Construction began late last year. This is the first major renovation of the surgery area since St. Mary’s opened in 1981. The project enlarges two operating rooms allowing for more efficiency in patient care and accommodating state-of-the-art technology.

The St. Mary’s Medical Center Foundation raised $1 million of the total cost of the project with the support of physicians, staff and the community.

St. Mary’s Medical Center

Earns Chest Pain Accreditation

clip_image001

Blue Springs, Mo. – St. Mary’s Medical Center has earned Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. St. Mary’s undertook a rigorous evaluation and refinement of heart care processes in order to integrate the industry’s best practices into its cardiac care services. The accreditation proves St. Mary’s works seamlessly with area Emergency Medical Services to ensure patients in eastern Jackson County get the treatment they need during the critical early stages of a heart attack.

As an Accredited Chest Pain Center, St. Mary’s ensures patients who come to the Emergency Department with chest pain or discomfort are given the immediate treatment necessary to avoid as much heart damage as possible. Protocol-based procedures developed by leading experts in cardiac care are part of St. Mary’s overall cardiac care services.

“This accreditation further demonstrates our dedication to excellence and quality care for our patients,” says Annette Small, CEO, St. Mary’s Medical Center. “It shows that when patients come to St. Mary’s they can trust us to provide the best possible outcomes in heart care.”

Heart attack warning signs:

  • Chest discomfort—pressure, squeezing or pain; lasting more than a few minutes, or comes and goes
  • Discomfort or pain in the upper body—in one or both arms, the back, neck jaw or stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweat
  • Nausea or lightheadedness.

Cynthia Peters, Director of Cardiac Services for St. Mary’s Medical Center, says, “The accreditation also emphasizes the importance of community education. We need to remind people not to wait when they think they might be having a heart attack. Don’t wait. Call 911. The sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart.”

St. Mary’s Medical Center is an acute care facility of Carondelet Health (CarondeletHealth.org) which also includes St. Joseph Medical Center, three long-term care facilities and home care services.
